Ms. Scarlett Haskins was recently honored as the Decatur County District Teacher of the Month for August after being selected as the Riverside High School Teacher of the Month. In a conversation with Scarlett, we asked her about her history, philosophy of teaching, and what she enjoys the most about her profession:
“I graduated from the University of Memphis earning a degree in Mathematics. I continued my academic endeavors and earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Memphis as well. I also have obtained an additional 30 hours of post-graduate work from various universities. My teaching career began in Shelby County at Bartlett High school where I spent 23 years teaching math, mostly Honors Geometry. Twelve years ago, we moved to Decatur County and I began teaching Spanish at Riverside High School. I spent the first ten years in Spanish and have spent the past two teaching math again. Through my years in the classroom, my philosophy of education has really been simple – I think all students should have the opportunity to learn in a safe, structured environment. I strive to provide that for each student, each day.”
When asked what her favorite part of teaching is, Ms. Scarlett says, “my favorite part of teaching is coming to school each day. I feel like I’ve never had a “job,” I just go to school. I really enjoy the interaction with the students and all of the staff.”
We are so proud of Ms. Haskins and glad that she chose Decatur County to call home. She is a great asset to our county and our schools. Thank you to American Fidelity for presenting Scarlett with a certificate and gift card.
