Coach Nicole Courtney ws recently honored as the Decatur County District Teacher of the Month for March after being selected as the Riverside High School Teacher of the Month for February. This comes on the eve of a back to back run for the girls basketball state championship. I had a chance to sit down with Coach Courtney and ask her about her history, philosophy of teaching, and what she enjoys the most about her profession:
“I have been employed at Riverside High School for 12 years. I have spent over half of my time as an educator at RHS teaching 9th and 11th grade English and as the head Girls Basketball Coach. I have also worked at Lexington High School, Riverdale High School, and multiple positions within the Lewis County School District. I am a graduate of Perry County High School and earned my Bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University.”
When asked why she chose education and why she continues in the profession she said, “Originally, I ventured into the education profession to coach basketball, but the journey soon led me to be as competitive in teaching my students as I was coaching my basketball team. Being a head coach and teaching a core curriculum class has given me the opportunity not only to challenge athletes in the gym, but also to challenge all students in my classroom. I think that all children have potential and have something unique they can bring to their own education. I strongly believe hard work is just as vital in the classroom as it is on the court. I am honored to be remembered for being a part of the amazing Lady Panther basketball teams during my time here, but I am also proud that I will also be remembered for challenging students academically as well. I teach because I love to learn. I teach because it challenges me to grow. I teach because I had great teachers who inspired me. I teach because I had two parents who valued education and always pushed me to do my best. I teach because I LOVE a challenge.”
We are so proud of Coach Courtney for her efforts both on and off the basketball court. She is an excellent teacher in both English, basketball, and life. Coach Courtney, we are so proud that you made Decatur County Schools your home!
