DCMS

Friday, November 11th, 2022, was the first year since 2019 that Decatur County Middle School was able to host its annual Veterans' Day Program.  "We have really missed hosting all of the veterans and recognizing them for what they did the past few years," said Keith Walker, Principal at DCMS.  Covid has kept DCMS from hosting this annual event so this year they worked really hard to put on a special program.  Mrs. Amanda Salas, guidance counselor at DCMS is in charge of the student council, and these students and their sponsor planned and coordinated the entire program.  Veterans were brought in at 9:30 while the entire student body and staff of DCMS gave them a standing ovation and welcomed them into the gym.  Veterans were also honored by the student council with a recognition of their name and branch of service and were given a special certificate to commemorate this day and the veterans were provided with a sit down meal.

Student council performed most of the program but students also had a chance to hear from veterans with "The Ragged Old Flag" being recited and a special Thirteen fold ceremony being performed and explained.  Along with the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem was sung and TAPS was performed at the conclusion of the program. Spouses of Veterans were also recognized with a special poem and a red rose.  We are very thankful for our veterans and are proud to honor them in this way every year.  Thank you to everyone who had a part in making this day special for our students, staff, and veterans!
